Adelaide, and South Australia in general has suffered over the decades, from piecemeal, short sighted road transport infrastructure development.
The prize for the most stand out farce would have to be the one-way, reversible "Southern Expressway". It is undeniably a beautiful length of roadway, but it is closed 'for lunch' each day so that the traffic flow can safely be reversed for the afternoon traffic.
Another standout exercise in stupidity is the Anzac underpass under Anzac Highway. Then 150 meters down the road is the tramline overpass. Another kilometer or so is the Emerson overpass. Hah????
Would it not be a much more long term and cheaper solution, for the Emerson ovepass to be extended northwards, over the tramline (no tram overpass needed) over Anzac Highway, (no tunnel under Anzac Highway needed, and then down to South Road. This could have been part of an eventual elevated North-South expressway from the Salisbury-Port Adelaide expressway to Darlington and the Sothern Expressway.
The time has come. With the Premier's grand plan for another half million residents in Adelaide over the next few decades, we have to bite the bullet and consider an elevated North-South tollway. The time and money saved on this unhindered transport would be welcomed by many Adelaideians who currently have to grind their way slowly south or north.
A Private/Government partnership would be the only way this vision could ever reach fruition. It would solve the shocking gridlock at the Port Road/South Road intersection. The proposed tunnel would not be needed.
Don't rule out a tollway Premier Rann.
Just like a discussion on Nuclear Power, don't rule it out
