Auckland at Easter

Thinh and I spent Easter over in Auckland NZ. A lovely and proud city even in this economic downturn.
It is not much bigger than Adelaide, but seems to have much more 'get-up-and-go' about it, particularly when it comes to development. And lots of things to do, I was quickly reminded that Bungy Jumping was invented in New Zealand. And for those really brave enough, one can jump off the Sky Tower, with a rope attached.
That tower is the tallest in the southern hemisphere, and we were told it's even taller than the Eiffel Tower.

We went on a number of tours, including harbour cruises.
Kiwi's have every reason to be proud of Auckland.

And hey, it was so green everywhere. If anything on the tours, the only thing that kept getting in the way of my camera, were the trees, everywhere, blocking the view.

As an Aucklander who's married to an Adelaidian, I think part of the difference is that Aucklanders think and act like a very big fish (most haven't realised how small their fish bowl is), whereas Adelaidians know that they are a small-ish fish in a big tank.

Another thing, is the difference in immigration policy between AU and NZ. The population growth in Auckland is mainly driven by immigration. Currently Auckland's growth rate is double that of Sydney and Melbourne.

Related to this is the cultural diversity in Auckland. Central Auckland is about 60% white, and South Auckland is less than half white. (For some reason ghettoisation is not a serious problem, e.g. there's no Chinatown to speak of, but there is a gang problem in Auckland...)
