We have visitors from Auckland and took them on a trip to Goolwa. I hadn't been there for almost a year.
We did not see one Pelican. Not one!
There were two black swans, and a number of small birds.
The water held back by the barrage was just a series of ponds. The sea water on the other side of the barrage was probably two meters higher than on the "freshwater" side.
The old paddle steamer "GOOLWA" was high and dry and the nearest water was about 10 meters away.
Queenlanders would just not tolerate this.
But whilst we South Australians shout and protest, nothing is happening to save the lakes, even as Queenland is in flood.
Our Kiwi guests were stunned into silence. They could not comprehend what they were witnessing.
And could only eventually utter the words "this is disgraceful". What an understatement.
The local streets and shops were almost deserted of tourists.
The only activity were the few cars with cameras pointing out of the windows as they drove past the catastrophe. By contrast, Victor Harbor was booming.
Yes this is a disgrace.
And the best our leaders can do is have historic meaningless aggreements and threaten to take the issue to the high court.
SA ............ the can't do state.
