The State Government is holding secret files on thousands of ordinary people, according to a highly placed source said to be involved in amassing data about people who do not know they’ve been spied upon.
The secret files are alleged to include information about well-known business people, company directors, sports personalities, people in the entertainment industry, religious groups, the media and legal profession.
The government acknowledges it has been gathering files on the basis of collecting “criminal intelligence”, but has never admitted the extent of its covert operation.
According to the operative, the government net is now cast more widely than it was during the notorious Salisbury affair which led to the sacking of the police commissioner by then premier Don Dunstan.
“I would not be surprised if the files filled a whole room,” said SA Council for Civil Liberties chair George Mancini. “In fact I would be surprised if they didn’t. But it is disturbing that they do.”
